Background

When Philippa Nicholson decided to go it alone after working as a software engineer for 16 years, her decision was based on a strong foundation of past experience and what seemed like a timely opportunity.

"I first decided to start my business when the company I was working for went through a sale and restructure. This involved selling off a software product with which I was heavily involved.

"I set up my limited company with a view to buying the software myself, but failed to get it. So I took some contract consultancy work while I thought about my direction."

Independence

But Philippa's independent spirit wouldn't let this initial setback get in her way: "By the time I knew I had failed to acquire the software, I had been through business start-up training, and was geared up to run my own venture. I decided that having been so close to being my own boss, I wanted to give it a go. That was when I dreamt up my training venture."

Without any financial or selling skills, Philippa viewed starting the business as a difficult challenge, but was determined to manage,

"All I had was a sound technical background and some determination. It seemed like a very positive challenge, and I felt strongly motivated to acquire the necessary skills."

Support from Business Gateway

Philippa's solicitor put her in touch with Business Gateway for support and she was able to fund her training venture from consultancy fees, by doing both part-time. Some additional financial support from her parents enabled her to get started without relying on loans.

In control

At the moment Philippa is the director and only employee in the company. She creates and develops the training products and markets them herself.

"There are some aspects to my business which I might like to delegate in future, but at the moment it is a question of getting the existing ideas properly launched."

So does she think it's worth all the effort?

"Self-generated business is incredibly rewarding, and I really enjoy networking."

Philippa's tips for business success?

  1. Get it in writing
  2. Go with your gut instinct
  3. Rely on yourself more than anyone else
